Nessuno, fino al 1596, si era mai accorto che alcune stelle conosciute e osservate da secoli variavano ogni tanto di splendore. Fu in quell\u2019anno che l\u2019astronomo olandese David Fabricius scopr\u00ec la prima stella variabile periodica: era Mira Ceti (dal latino, &#8220;meravigliosa&#8221;). Da quel momento, l\u2019immutabilit\u00e0 del cielo fu irrimediabilmente compromessa. Ma grazie ad alcuni tipi di stelle variabili, \u00e8 possibile determinare le distanze delle galassie e le dimensioni dell\u2019Universo.
